The month of April started for our two volunteers with a little trip to Ogre. Laure and Khristina went to collaborate with some other EVS volunteers who are working in a local alternative school with children. They helped them with their ‘Green Day’ (Zala Diena), took lots of pictures, spoke with the kids, and shared with the others their experience and what they were doing and organising in BaMbuss.
They also kept learning Latvian with their teacher, Brigita. They had quite informal lessons every week, so they put into practice their new vocabulary going to shops, ordering cake in cafés and even starting to discover verb conjugation!
Khristina started challenging her fear of getting lost by exploring the city and going to some events on her own. She also booked a solo trip to visit Estonia! Laure, on her side, made an adventurous trip to Warsaw for Easter and had a couple visits from her friends and family here in Riga. Also, she went to Sigulda to make the most out of our newly arrived sunny days!
In mid April, the girls attend the an orchestra concert performed by The Lords of the Sounds: ‘Oscar Music Awards’. It took place in a beautiful, old Russian building: Rigas Kongresu nams. They had a blast and really enjoyed re-discovering the music of some movies like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Matrix, or Titanic.
They also spent some proper time with their Latvian flatmate Raivo, exploring the weekly market at the other side of the river, in Kalnciema iela, as well as adventuring themselves in all hidden corners of the city and treating themselves to vegan burgers at Fat Pumpkin!
Our EVS girls were also invited at the end of the month to do a workshop in a school in Jugla, where they spoke about plastic pollution and zero waste to 6th graders. At the end of their presentation they showed the children how to make a tote bag out of a t-shirt, and it was a fun experience, indeed!
Finally, the two volunteers helped to organise a story telling evening at our youth studio BaMbuss, where former volunteers from Latvia were sent in Erasmus+ projects to other countries. They came and told their experiences, fun stories, and lessons learnt during their time abroad.
We can’t wait to see what May’s got for Laure and Khristina. Their calendars are already full with adventures and fun activities to do!
Project “BaMbuss Volunteers” is financially supported by the European Commission “Erasmus +: Youth in Action”, which is managed by the Youth International Program Agency in Latvia.
