August went by as quickly as July, and all of our volunteers had a great time enjoying the Latvian summer and its unusual high temperatures!
The month started with Laure and Khristina celebrating their six months in Latvia and going out to eat in Bhajan Café, reflecting with the BRF staff about their experiences so far in their EVS adventure. Then, the work continued!
Khristina kept teaching Spanish in her language course and assisted with the hosting of some partners from Estonia and Slovenia who came for a study visit, whilst Laure met weekly with her students for FotoKlub and also participated in a BAL LAB workshop of experimental cinema with plants and botanical elements, exhibiting her movie along with other international artists!
Meanwhile, our short-term volunteers developed their own initiatives regarding DIY and sustainable fashion, stencil workshops, art classes, sports sessions, and even a surviving workshop outdoors! They also had the chance to explore more of the country by going to events held by other organizations in cities like Prieli and Madona. However, the biggest highlight was working on an Opportunity Market event that was held at the end of the month, hosting dozens of organizations from across Latvia and promoting the work of youth centres and initiatives! Though it was a lot of work, everyone was happy with the result.
On another note, our long-term girls finished their Latvian classes and had their exam! Which, in the end, was an exhibition in Latvian about their lessons and experiences. Laure showed a lot of her pictures, whilst Khristina took a risk and wrote a poem in Latvian. We were so proud to see their efforts and results!
Finally, the girls kept enjoying the summer and even went to the Vegan Fest in Riga, held in the Botanical Gardens on a wonderfully sunny day.
